In this week’s reading from the Book of Exodus we are told about the story of the Ten Commandments being given to Moses.
Many of us can probably recite the 10 Commandments by heart, having learned them as a child in religious classes. The commandments are part of a covenant between God and people, a covenant which was intended to show us how to love God and love one another. Throughout his life and preaching, and particularly in the Beatitudes, Jesus expands upon the teachings of the Commandments for us.
In order to be in a right relationship with God, we also need to be in a right relationship with each other. The 10 Commandments are not meant to be oppressive but rather as a gift from God to guide us in experiencing a loving relationship with Him and our neighbor.
