We all encounter pretentious people in our lives from time to time. For example, the show-off who exaggerates his social status or the name-dropper.
In this week's readings God calls us to live without pretensions.
In the reading from James, he points out that jealousy and self-ambition – elements of pretentiousness – most often lead to disorder. Instead, we are told to follow God's wisdom with actions that are "pure, then peaceful, gentle, compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without inconstancy or insincerity."
Simply put, we must follow the path Jesus laid out, emptying ourselves to serve others...without pretension.
If that sounds like a lot of work, remember it is nothing compared to what God has done for us.
