Pretentious is not a word that comes to mind when we think about Jesus' disciples. But in this week's Gospel, we see the disciples missing the point of what Jesus was teaching because of their own pretensions.
While Jesus tried to teach them about what His mission is really about, the disciples were discussing who among them was the greatest.
The Gospel tells us that the disciples did not understand what Jesus was saying, but they were afraid to question Him. In fact, His teachings are hard to understand...and hard to accept. Being a servant to all -- as Jesus taught -- is to give one's life for others.
Sometimes we can be like the disciples and miss God's point because of our own pretensions. But we don't have to be afraid to question God and ask Him for guidance in being His disciple.
