In this week's gospel, James and John want in on Jesus’ glory, asking Him for a place of prominence on His right and left. We can almost see Jesus shaking His head and asking, "Haven't you guys been listening?"
Jesus tells them the he did not come to be served, but to serve. In other words, true glory comes from servanthood.
If we want an eternal share in the kingdom of God, we can't just ask or wish for it. We must embrace the example of Jesus and give of ourselves for the sake of others. Christians believe such servanthood is at the very core of our faith.
Servanthood is demanding, to be sure. It may even involve suffering, sacrifice and a lot of self-giving. But there is no greater reward that comes from it – eternal life in heaven united forever with our Lord.
