The readings from the first Sunday in Lent lead Christians into a special time of prayer, sacrifice and good works as we prepare for Easter.
Lent challenges us to accept God's promise and trust in His Word to give us direction in our lives. In Catholic theology, we call it obedience to God.
Now before you change the station, understand that this obedience is not meant to deprive us or make things difficult. In fact, it is just the opposite.
We can think of God as a loving parent, who only wants what is best for us. When we are obedient, we listen and trust His Word to guide us so that we can live life more abundantly.
God's Word calls us to love one another as He loves us. This Lent, discover the joy found in obedience to God by helping others. Volunteer. For example, you can give your time to one of the many ministries that are part of Catholic Charities.
Pay closer attention to God's Word. That's what Lent is all about.
