In this week's Gospel, Jesus tells the parable of the prodigal son who squanders his inheritance and then returns home to the joy of his father.
When the son who had abandoned his father seeks and receives his forgiveness and help, the other son, who had remained with the father all along, is not happy about the lavish welcome his brother receives.
The parable is all about reconciliation. So which son do you identify with?
For those who are busy making our way in the world and who feel separated from God, the Gospel challenges us to remember and seek out our Creator. Like the father in our story, our heavenly father will rejoice over our return.
For the steadfast faithful, the parable reminds us that we have access to and enjoy God’s presence and gifts every day. God’s joy over another does not diminish our inheritance.
Whichever the case, we can rejoice that we have such a loving God who watches over and provides for us.
