There's an incredible contrast in this week's Gospel between the true humility of Jesus and the human nature of his apostles. We hear Jesus telling the apostles that He will give His life for them. And what do the apostles do? They begin to argue about which one of them is the greatest.
How often do we act like the apostles, exalting ourselves over one another – debating who is smarter, prettier, more powerful or wealthier? When in fact, we should be listening to Jesus and following His example of putting the needs of others above our self-interests.
True humility is not easy. It is something we must choose freely. And it may cost something. But the rewards will far outweigh the costs, as God will exalt us in heaven.
