In this week's reading from Genesis, Abraham shows us what hospitality is all about.
Abraham sees three men in need and goes to great lengths to help them. He is totally attentive to the three strangers – he greets them and bows down in respect – he asks them to stay and rest – and on hearing their reply, he serves them with his finest flour and most tender, choice steer. Abraham not only serves his guests, he takes them into his heart, giving to them with great generosity. He cares for his guests both physically and spiritually. This is the true hospitality God calls us to.
The next time you offer hospitality to a friend or stranger, do so with the spirit of Abraham.
A passage from Hebrews sums up the lesson in story of Abraham quite nicely. "Do not neglect hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly entertained angels."
