“Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less,” said author C. S. Lewis. In this week’s scripture readings, we hear this theme clearly. Humility is not denegrating ourselves and putting ourselves down. It is knowing our abilities and realizing our gifts; and then using those gifts to serve others, thus giving glory to God, not ourselves.
Founded in the 1930s, the Guild of St. Apollonia is a local group of dentists who demonstrate humility. They show appreciation for their gifts by using them to give back to others by providing dental services to the less fortunate of our community. They do not think less of themselves. No, their humility is shown when they use the talents they are blessed with to help others.
The members of the Guild of St. Apollonia do not look for payment, reimbursement, or even recognition. Their joy comes from giving glory to God through humble service to others. We all have talents that we can use, let’s consider how we can humbly serve others and our God.
