The intensity of the words in chapter 6 of St. Paul’s letter to Timothy support the notion of what could be called “spiritual estate planning” and its importance in our lives on earth.
We are told to "pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness."
The original Greek words have a far richer meaning than our simple English translations suggest. For example, the word "righteousness" emphasizes doing what is right. The word "devotion" points to belief that is supported by practice. "Gentleness" includes both an attitude and a behavior.
The words tell us that what we invest in here on earth will determine our inheritance in heaven. Our consultant, God, advises that luxury, wealth and ease, are not likely to produce many eternal rewards, but help for the poor, care for the sick, love for one another will yield more than we can imagine.
