In St. Luke's gospel this week we hear about two criminals who were crucified on either side of Jesus. While both of the thieves were suffering with Jesus, they each faced their death differently. One was bitter and fearful, desperate to escape and fleeing from his suffering. The good thief rebuked the first, reminding him that they both had been condemned justly but that Jesus had done nothing wrong. Recognizing his need for salvation, he said "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom," to which the Lord replied, "today, you will be with me in paradise."
Christians believe Jesus had the power to save himself, but instead he chose to save us. He did so because the good thief had faith and trust. Believers rejoice that, like that repentant thief, we can all choose to join Jesus in his victory over death, understanding that it will lead us to paradise. Let's ask ourselves today, do I have the faith to repent?
