The 20th century philosopher and poet George Santayana famously said, "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
This week's scripture readings offer a similar message. Jesus himself, in the Gospel, asks us to remember the story of Noah. People in those days were overindulgent in things not of God. They ignored Noah and ultimately were carried away by the flood. Jesus reminds us that we should not repeat the same mistake. Like Noah, we must make ourselves available to God and listen to what he is telling us.
Instead of getting carried away in revelry and excesses of the holiday season, set aside some time and be available to God. Remember, Advent is a time to awake from our sleep and prepare to enter into the joy of Christmas.
