There is a Chinese proverb that states, "A family with an old person has a living treasure of gold." Like our first scripture reading from the Feast of the Holy Family, this proverb reminds us of the importance of our elderly family members and the need to value them.
People are living much longer these days and many families are faced with the care of an elderly person – a grandparent, father, mother, or other relative. It can be challenging and difficult, but it may help to see such care as a ministry – we are caring in the way that Jesus taught us, with love and compassion.
God calls us to see all life as precious, from conception to old age. When we care for an elderly person, it provides the opportunity to honor them and give thanks for the path they helped create in our lives.
