How can we recognize God's movement within our lives as Simeon and Anna did from this week's Gospel?
Both lived their faith close to God. Anna worshipped night and day with fasting and prayer. Simeon was righteous and devout, trusting the promise of the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Christ. Over the years their devotional practices had refined their lives, allowing them to recognize God, whatever the circumstances. They had developed the facility to distinguish which movements in their life were of God and which were not.
When Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple, Simeon and Anna recognized him right away. They had been attentive to God's Word and were familiar with how he acts in the lives of his beloved people.
We can all be like Simeon and Anna. We can listen to God's Word more closely and live accordingly. We can engage in the devotional practices of our faith. By doing this we will better recognize the presence and movement of God in our life, no matter what the circumstances.
