"You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world."
As Jesus continues his Sermon on the Mount, those words from this week's gospel call us to be our best authentic selves, someone created in the image and likeness of God.
By itself, salt is bitter. But used with foods, salt adds flavor. We are salt – we can enhance others to savor a love for God and neighbor.
If our light is hidden under a bushel basket, it serves no purpose. We leave our brothers and sisters to stumble about in the dark. We are light – the light of Christ reflected onto others. When we enhance all that is good in the world and reveal to the world God's presence and love. Use the salts of mercy and love to preserve your own image and likeness to God and to enhance this world with the flavor of his love. That in the words of the psalmist "all might taste and see the goodness of the Lord."
