This week's reading from the book of Leviticus teaches that we are to "love our neighbor as ourselves." In the Gospel, Jesus instructs us to turn the other cheek and to love our enemies. When we pray the Our Father, we ask God to, "forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us."
Do we hear what God is saying? Revenge, grudges and retribution only lead to more wrongdoing.
Christians believe it is up to us to stand strong and act with compassion. Through non-violence, forgiveness and love for one another. If we are wronged, we need to squelch any impulse to take revenge and to evaluate the situation with the mind of Christ.
That is a very demanding expectation, to be sure. Yet this law of love is the law of God's kingdom. A kingdom where revenge, hatred and violence no longer rule human hearts. But Jesus does.
