Chances are you’ll go through your day today noticing various people with a cross of ashes on their forehead. Maybe you’ll be receiving ashes yourself. Today is Ash Wednesday, an important day on the Christian calendar. This day marks the beginning of the Lenten season, a time to reflect on our relationship with God, and see how we can improve this relationship.
For Christians, ashes symbolize our mortality. They remind us that our aim is to die to our worldly desires and walk closer with God. Ashes are placed in the shape of a cross as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice for our sins. They symbolize a new beginning as we repent, turning away from sin and towards God, trusting Him to heal us and make us whole.
Our creator, slow to anger and rich in kindness, is eager for us to draw closer to Him throughout this season of Lent.
