People have a natural fear of being abandoned. We’ve all experienced it. Think of the small child who wanders off and then realizes mom or dad is not there. Frantic terror sets in. But can we even imagine the sense of abandonment Jesus experienced during his passion and death that we just heard about on Palm Sunday?
First, we read that "all the disciples left him and fled." Then, while dying on the cross, we hear Christ cry out, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" We see how completely Jesus chose to identify with us humans as he experiences the fear associated with facing the ultimate abandonment – death itself.
During those times that we feel abandoned, there is something that can enable us not to lose hope, and to carry on. In the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God promises also to lift us into a new and enduring life.
