Our Palm Sunday readings remind us that the Christian mystery moves from abandonment – the dying of and to self – to exaltation – the rising to new life.
But what does self-abandonment mean in our daily lives? Perhaps it means we need to abandon our habit of thinking of ourselves first, ahead of others. Maybe we need to abandon some of the material things that clutter our focus on what is really important. Are there things we could leave behind in our busy lives to make more time for loved ones or to help those in need? What we give up – what we abandon – can lead to a new lease on life.
In Christ's suffering and death we see that what happens to be a loss can, in fact, result in new life. Like Jesus, let’s surrender ourselves into the arms of God where we find both our cross and our life.
