Catholic priest, Father Mychal Judge, served as chaplain to the New York City Fire Department and was the first fatality at the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks. He was a true hero, who gave completely of himself to help others.
Think of the heroes that our society frequently raises up – such as sports stars and celebrities, only to be let down by their limited and self-serving ways of life. The real heroes who we need to emulate are the Father Judges of the world – self-giving, caring people who work to minister in dangerous, stressful and challenging ways, but they choose to do this for others. The heroes, the saints, whose actions are actually glorifying God, modeling the example of Jesus who laid down his life for all.
Like our brother Jesus, we glorify God when we move beyond our needs, our wants – and place ourselves at the service of others.
