Father Andrew Greeley once reminded us it might be easy to run away to a monastery, away from the real world, the hectic hassles, the demands or a dysfunctional family. But, we would be forgetting the lesson of the incarnation. The God who became flesh. The lesson that we who are followers of Jesus do not run from the chaotic. We live in its midst, and run with it. We stay and try to transform it in love. It is our mission to make holy the secular aspects of our world. And we do this by being holy people. Sacrificing, patient, generous, loving, laughing people. No matter how maddening the world seems to be. Why? Because our God is here with us in every moment and situation. Never running away but with us and towards us always. Stay where you are in life and become that loving presence of God, regardless of the challenge or cost. This is the life of the disciple.
