Patience is a virtue. We've all heard this said many times, but do we really know what it means? This past Sunday’s scripture readings provide some insights. We are reminded that God is amazingly patient. He waits for wheat to grow enough so that weeds can be pulled without harming the wheat. He waits patiently for the seed to grow into a plant large enough to welcome the birds. He allows time for the yeast to work its leavening effect on the dough. The readings remind us that patience is a virtue – often referred to as one of the fruits of the Holy Spirit – a life-giving trait that enables us to wait for the maturing of people, abilities, ideas...and ourselves. As we patiently wait for the kingdom of heaven, let’s remember to live our days with the mercy, forgiveness, and justice of God.
