Rev. Mr. John E. Stanton Jr., will become Father John W .Stanton Jr. on Saturday, June 1, when the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone ordains him to the priesthood. The ordination will take place at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral. 50 Franklin St., Buffalo.
Deacon Stanton was ordained a transitional deacon by Bishop Malone in October 2012 and graduated from Christ the King Seminary, East Aurora, with a master’s degree in divinity on May 10, 2013.
Prior to entering Christ the King Seminary in 2007, Stanton was a certified public accountant and lawyer. Although he was living in the corporate world, the Catholic faith and religious life were not foreign concepts to him.
“My father’s brother, the late Msgr. Bill Stanton, was a diocesan priest who was a witness to the joys of priesthood. He loved it,” Deacon Stanton said. “I grew up surrounded with a great number of priests and sisters who truly loved serving the people of God,” he explained. In discerning whether the priesthood was the right calling for him, Deacon Stanton enrolled in a program for men interested in searching for those answers and studied philosophy and theology at Canisius College while continuing to practice law.
Once he entered the seminary, he worked in various ministries including several parishes, Holy Family, Albion; St. Jude the Apostle, North Tonawanda; Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Harris Hill; and St. Bernadette, Orchard Park. He also worked with Peaceprints Prison Ministries counseling inmates at Attica Correctional Facility and at the Response to Love Center where he was involved with outreach to inner-city residents.
Saturday’s ordination is open to the public. St. Joseph Cathedral is handicapped accessible.
